Celebrating the life of

Kathleen Lally Smith

November 24, 1947 - October 01, 2012

Kathleen Lally Smith

SAVANNAH - Kathleen Lally Smith was born on November 24, 1947 in Niles, Ohio to Dr. Edward and Naomi Lally. Kathleen and her four brothers Ed, Paul, Pat, & John were raised in Winslow, AZ and Youngstown, OH. After high school graduation, Kathleen worked as a medical assistant. She then moved on to United Airlines where she was a flight attendant and a fashion model for their print and television advertisements.
Kathleen met pilot, Robert Brookings Smith, II while flying routes out of Washington D.C. Kathleen and Bob were married in June 1972 and enjoyed forty years together. Happily, they raised four children in Annapolis, Maryland. Kathleen was a fantastic homemaker and enthusiastic mother; she was the most requested "field trip chaperone" during her sons' years at St. Mary's School in Annapolis. In 1991, Kathleen and Bob retired to Amelia Island, Florida where they lived until 2010, when they moved to Savannah, Georgia.
Kathleen, or "Ta" to her family and friends, was the hostess of legendary dinner parties, had a fantastic sense of humor and always made strangers feel welcome. She was a woman of great faith and a devout Catholic; Kathleen saw the good and promise in everyone. She enjoyed cooking, was an avid reader, and loved to spoil her two dogs, Atticus and Carmela. Kathleen was a terrible windsurfer and golfer, but was always game to try anything. Endlessly stylish, Kathleen was a licensed decorator and once owned and operated a bed and breakfast. Most of all, Kathleen loved to gather her family and friends together for any kind of celebration- Irish or otherwise!
Kathleen was the devoted wife to Robert "Bob" B. Smith, II and loving mother to Robert B. Smith, III Ginger, Molly Wilson Dave, Christopher "Smitty" Smith Nikki, and Jonathan B. Smith Shannon. She also cherished her eight grandchildren: JP, Katie, David, R.B. IV, Alex, Chloe, Finn and Connall. This summer, Kathleen became a great grandmother to baby Landon. Kathleen was a perfect wife, mother and friend and will be dearly missed by all that knew her.
A memorial service will be held on October 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hospice Savannah, Inc.
